Why Should Seniors Consume Omega-3s Daily?

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that omega-3 fatty acids have a range of health benefits, including lowering the total risk of mortality in seniors. Learn more about the important role that Omega-3s play in seniors’ health below.

Omega-3 Basics

The researchers found that having higher levels of omega-3 in the blood could predict a lower mortality rate in people over the age of 65. Omega-3s is one of two main types of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These acids contribute to providing energy for the body to use in the cardiovascular, pulmonary, immune, and endocrine systems, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH’s studies on diets high in omega-3s is linked to lower rates of cancer, reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease and a reduction in symptoms of arthritis.

Find Omega-3s in Food

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that occur widely in nature and appear in certain foods. Although this is an essential building block of the body, it must be consumed as the body cannot produce it. Seniors can get omega-3s naturally in the following foods:

  • Flaxseed oil
  • Soybeans
  • Salmon, tuna, and sardines
  • Chia seeds

These foods can be easily incorporated into meals. Chia seeds are a good addition to smoothies or oatmeal. Regular cooking oil can be swapped out for flaxseed oil. Fish is a versatile protein.

Promotes Brain Health

Although nothing cures dementia, cognitive disorders can be delayed through healthy lifestyle habits. Regular intake of omega-3s have an important role in regulating normal brain functions such as memory and motor.

Regulates Triglycerides

Omega-3 fatty acids can regulate the levels of triglycerides in the bloodstream that are responsible for clogging arteries and creating imbalances in cholesterol levels. It is important to get regular physicals and go for blood tests, which will indicate triglyceride levels.
