Stay Cool, Stay Hydrated – Enjoy Summer with Your Friends at Wesley Enhanced Living

We all love to enjoy summer by being outside in the sun and catching some rays while out on a walk. Now’s the time to soak up the sunshine before fall and winter sneak up on us. An important point to remember is to stay cool and hydrated so that you can keep up with the summer fun.

There are different ways to ensure you avoid dehydration besides drinking water. When you move to one of Wesley Enhanced Living’s retirement communities, not only do you have a ton of opportunities to meet new people, but we also pay great attention to your nutritional needs and overall wellness. Our staff is dedicated to enhancing all areas of your life during this exciting season of life.

Stay Cool, Stay Hydrated…and Don’t Forget Your Proteins!

Many seniors struggle to stay hydrated, which can result in feeling tired or developing urinary tract infections. Increasing your fluid intake is crucial, especially when it is hot outside. Additionally, as a senior, your body needs more protein than in your younger years. Check out these reasons to keep protein levels high in your diet:

  1. Preserve Your Muscle Mass: As you age, you lose muscle. When your muscles deteriorate, your mobility is affected and recovering from illness is a slower and longer process.
  2. Your Body No Longer Processes Protein Efficiently: Part of the aging process includes the body’s inability to process protein like it did when you were younger.

For many seniors, getting enough protein is difficult. For example, you may struggle to chew because of ill-fitting dentures. At Wesley Enhanced Living, we understand this and have adapted a recipe to help hydrate you as well as give you some added protein:

Pina Colada Protein Shake (Adapted from the blog Half Scratched)

A different twist on the typical protein shake with the unique and familiar taste of everyone’s favorite island drink:

½ cup unsweetened almond milk

½ cup unsweetened coconut milk

¾ cup frozen pineapple chunks

1 scoop vanilla protein powder

1 teaspoon honey

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Place all of the ingredients in your blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

HINT: If the consistency is too thin, add some additional ice or frozen pineapple and blend a second time to combine.

Enjoy a Taste of the Islands While Getting Additional Protein
