Case in point, Doylestown Independent Living resident Mr. Robert Phillips shared with our community a look back at his time with Bing Crosby Enterprises in the 1950s. Mr. Phillips was part of the TV recording revolution, working on building the first practical magnetic tape video recorder so that ABC could air quality recordings of Bing Crosby’s TV shows. As with Bing Crosby’s radio shows, recording Bing’s TV performances gave him more flexibility and the ability to edit before airing. The product had the quality of a live broadcast, but without any mistakes.
Bing Crosby was an innovator in his time, embracing and standardizing new technology in his industry, from microphone and amplification technology to the magnetic tape revolution. Bob Phillips witnessed and contributed during this pivotal time that laid the groundwork for computer and entertainment tech today.
We are so grateful to Mr. Phillips for sharing his insight into the Bing Crosby radio and TV days. And we appreciate the storied backgrounds of all our residents who make Wesley Enhanced Living Doylestown such a special place to be!
Mr. Phillips details his experience, including being lent out to Judy Garland to record one of her shows:
