Navigating through change is hard for anyone, but can especially be hard as we get older. Change can have serious effects on the mind and body, so it is important to be aware of the changes occurring and finding different ways to navigate through them.

Here are some of the common transitions we may face in our mature years:

  1. Transitioning into retirement
  2. Coping with loss
  3. Health concerns

Although it can be daunting, there are many ways to have a smooth transition into the next stages of life.

Here are a few ways to help ensure an easy and enjoyable transition:

  1. Keep an open mind. It is no question that change can be difficult, but to make the transition a little easier, keeping an open mind about the situation is a good way to change your mindset if you are feeling down. By focusing on the positive aspects of the change, you might even find yourself welcoming it!
  2. Connect with family and friends. Are you feeling lonely, anxious, or just need to talk to someone? Reach out to a loved one or friend! Whether it is a letter, email, video call, or lunch date, connecting with someone you love will help to find some comfort and lift your spirits.
  3. Reach out to a professional. Therapists and counselors are a great way to talk to someone and develop new strategies to help navigate life’s changes. If you would like to reach out to someone, make sure to communicate with the care team at WEL or a trusted doctor to start the process.
  4. Take up a new hobby. Finding a new hobby or passion is something else that will help any transition. Whether it is walking, taking an art class, or even picking back up an old hobby, these activities will help with any boredom and are also very relaxing.
  5. Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness and meditation relax the mind and body. Find a quiet and peaceful place to sit and begin relaxing. If this is challenging on your own, there are many different mindfulness and meditation programs available to help you.

Practicing these suggestions or finding your own ways to navigate change will help you flow through all of life’s seasons with peace and comfort. Life may bring storms, but we can choose to dance in the rain!
