Wesley Enhanced Living Doylestown residents operated heavy machinery at the N.J. construction-themed park

Doylestown, Pa. (September 11, 2019) – To start his 93rd year with a smash, Doylestown resident, Bill Buehler had the opportunity of a lifetime – to crush a car with an excavator at the Diggerland XL Experience At Diggerland USA, a construction-themed adventure park in West Berlin, N.J.

After owning a locally-based construction company before retiring, Bill has been itching to do one thing – operate construction equipment. When the staff at Wesley Enhanced Living Doylestown– the senior living community where he resides – heard Bill’s dream of taking a walk down memory lane, they partnered with Diggerland USA to make his 93rd birthday celebration sweet.

A group of some of his closest friends, including one of his fellow residents at Wesley Enhanced Living Doylestown, spent time at the park on Tuesday, Sept. 10. As guest of honor, Bill operated a giant excavator to completely crush a vinyl-wrapped car read “Happy 93rd Birthday Bill!”

It’s safe to say Bill had a birthday celebration that he will never forget.

Wesley Enhanced Living Invests $10 Million in Updating its Bucks and Montgomery County Senior Living Communities

A combined $10 million renovation project will bring new and refreshed dining and living amenities to seniors

Warminster, Pa. (September 9, 2019) – Wesley Enhanced Living (WEL) will devote $10 million to renovate, refresh and update its WEL Doylestown and WEL Upper Moreland communities, serving seniors in Bucks and Montgomery counties.

“This investment will modernize amenities at our Bucks County and Montgomery County communities. With this investment being completely resident-focused, we’re updating furniture in lobby and lounge settings, adding on-site restaurants, recreational areas and so much more,” explained President and Chief Executive Officer of Wesley Enhanced Living, Jeff Petty. “With these up-to-date offerings, we are confident we will better serve, support and accommodate our residents – providing top-notch service while enhancing their quality of life.”

Slated to begin in late September, construction at WEL Doylestownis expected to be completed in March 2020. The 22,100-square-foot community currently includes 216 apartments. The estimated six-month project at WEL Doylestown will include the following renovations:

  • addition of an upscale restaurant, providing an outdoor eating option;
  • new indoor main street Bistro and Pub food lounge;
  • brand new lobby and refreshed Welcome Center to better accommodate residents and guests;
  • expanded and renovated auditorium area for resident recreation;
  • completely renovated lounges and community spaces, featuring new furnishings; and
  • spacious apartment homes with choice of finishes.

Currently underway, renovations at WEL Upper Moreland are expected to be completed by year’s end. The Montgomery County senior living community includes a combined total of 200 apartments and cottages in a total of 184,000-square-feet. Construction at WEL Upper Moreland includes the following updates:

  • new lobby with expanded seating;
  • addition of a Bistro and Pub restaurant, offering tavern-style options;
  • development of a movie theater, featuring comfortable seating and wide-screen projection, as well as a fireplace lounge for resident use;
  • creation of a TV lounge with expanded seating;
  • updated main dining room; and
  • renovated gift shop, library and chapel.

All Wesley Enhanced Living communities provide accommodations for various senior living options, including Independent Living, Personal Care and Skilled Nursing.

Senior residents raise money for college students from Montgomery County to provide financial support for their higher education

Hatboro, Pa. (July 25, 2019) – Over the past year, senior residents of Wesley Enhanced Living (WEL) Upper Moreland raised nearly $8,000 through hosting various fundraising events at the senior living community all with one common goal in mind – to provide financial support to the young people who help and support these residents each and every day.

WEL Upper Moreland residentsdeveloped the ServeWEL scholarship program to provide financial assistance to the student employees of WEL, to support their education and future potential. Now in its thirteenth year, the ServeWEL program has awarded over $90,000 in scholarships to its dedicated, determined and driven student employees.

“The ServeWEL scholarship program is special. In support of this program, our residents take the initiative to raise funds dedicated to assisting the junior team members, as they pursue their high school or college education,” said Maureen Casey, Executive Director of both Wesley Enhanced Living Upper Moreland and Burholme communities. “There’s no better feeling than seeing the grace and kindness this program inspires.”

The scholarship program not only offers support to students, but it also allows for those at the community to foster and continue to grow the bond between local young people and senior residents.

“From year to year, our thoughtful residents develop and cultivate a unique bond with our staff,” said Maureen. “Seeing young students grow throughout their employment really makes a positive impact on all of those here.”

The students will each receive a $1,000 scholarship to put toward their college education. This year’s recipients plan to attend schools such as LaSalle University, New York University, Temple University, Towson University, University of Pittsburgh and spanning all the way to Florida Atlantic University.

Wesley Enhanced Living Controller to Receive Honorary Degree from Rosemont College

Rosemont, PA (May 9, 2019) – Catherine Brown Heckman ’01, ’11 will be awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters at Rosemont College’s Commencement ceremony on May 11. Catherine will receive this honor as her work ethic serves as an example of the power of a Rosemont education and degree. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA), Heckman currently serves as the Controller for Wesley Enhanced Living (WEL), a nonprofit continuing care retirement community organization with nearly 1,200 employees, serving over 1,100 residents across seven locations throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania.

“We are so proud of Catherine for receiving this prestigious recognition,” said Ken Franiak, Chief Operating Officer at Wesley Enhanced Living. “As the Controller for WEL, Catherine is entrusted with maintaining a high level of integrity and dedication. This recognition highlights the impact Catherine has made not only as a student and alumni member of Rosemont College, but to the senior living industry as well.”

Catherine Brown Heckman attended Rosemont as a student of REAP, an undergraduate degree completion program for adult women, in the Undergraduate Women’s College while in her late thirties. She graduated summa cum laude with a dual major degree in Accounting and Management in 2001. She later returned to Rosemont’s School of Graduate and Professional Studies, earning an MBA degree in 2011, and was the recipient of the Strategic Management Award. Heckman’s graduate thesis was titled, “Generational Waves and Retirement Choices” and detailed the expectations and goals of each living generation in an era of complex changes and choices in America’s retirement system. This theme dovetails Heckman’s career path and passion for enriching senior living.

“I am delighted to honor Catherine Heckman,” said Sharon Latchaw Hirsh, PhD, President of Rosemont College. “Catherine’s commitment to education and her community is a tremendous example to us all.”

Prior to her role at Wesley Enhanced Living, she served as the Assistant Controller for Montgomery County Community College, the Controller for The College of New Jersey, the Finance Director for Independence Mission Schools, the Controller for International Ministries – American Baptist Churches USA, the Accounting Manager for Pennswood Village, and the Senior Corporate Accountant for ACTS Retirement Life Communities. Heckman initiated her career as an auditor at a regional public accounting firm and served nearly four years until specializing in nonprofit organizations. She is a member of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

Rosemont’s 96th Commencement exercises will be held Saturday, May 11. The ceremony will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Connelly Green. The Rev. Jim Martin, SJ, editor-at-large of the Jesuit magazine, America, will address graduates of the Undergraduate College and the Schools of Graduate and Professional Studies, along with families, friends, faculty, staff, trustees, alumni, and community members.
